Towering 161 meters above Gozo’s northern coast, Ta’ Ġurdan Lighthouse has faithfully guided ships since 1853. Built under British rule to handle growing maritime traffic, this sentinel initially shone a powerful beam visible for 38 miles thanks to 21 oil lamps and giant lenses. While technology has dimmed its intensity, its historic charm remains.
The climb to the lighthouse might test your legs, but the reward is epic. Panoramic views unfold beneath you, and with a friendly attendant present, a peek inside and a thrilling climb to the top might be possible. Even without that, wander the hilltop, explore the remains of a colonial observation post, and soak in the breathtaking 360-degree scenery. Ta’ Ġurdan may not roar as brightly as before, but its legacy and stunning vistas continue to shine.
